According to Oxford Dictionaries, “hygge” (pronounced hoo-guh) is “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).” In some languages, there are certain words that have no direct translation, and “hygge” is one of those words. However, in English, “cozy” comes pretty close. If you’d like to bring more hygge into your home during these cold winter months, here are a few suggestions to get you started:
1. Keep it simple and sentimental.
In decorating, think sentimentality and simplicity to achieve a happy and peaceful environment. Store away any unwanted clutter to create a serene space in your home and make room for cherished family photos and keepsakes.
2. Decorate with neutral colors and natural textures.
Stick to a neutral color scheme with harmonious shades, and add texture with natural materials, such as wood, leather and wool. For small pops of color, add some fresh flowers and houseplants.
3. Cozy, cozy, cozy!
Layer your bed with soft blankets, quilts and pillows, and don’t feel guilty about spending an extra hour or so there, napping or reading.
4. Did we mention cozy?
Create a cozy nook, preferably near a window looking out into nature, and add a warm throw blanket and fluffy pillows, for a peaceful afternoon retreat.
5. Invest in comfort.
Indulge in comfortable loungewear, like a plush robe, warm slippers or socks, soft pajamas, or oversized knit sweaters.
6. Keep the warm beverages flowing.
Curl up with a mug of hot cocoa, apple cider, herbal tea or coffee.
7. It’s all about the candles.
Create an inviting ambiance at home by lighting more candles (and fireplace if you have one), as the softer lighting is perfect for relaxing and socializing with friends and family.
8. Intimate gatherings over Pinterest-worthy parties.
Spend quality time with family and close friends in a casual and relaxed atmosphere, perhaps conversing over coffee or wine, or even indulging in a hearty meal and homemade pastries.
Most importantly, the concept of hygge is about enjoying the simple pleasures in life and being present and thankful.
